Shufflepuck

Air hockey at the last table in a quiet café. The house player is sharp down the middle and a little late to the rails.

A small homage to the directness of old Macintosh games: one table, one opponent, and rules you understand before the first serve.

Where you hit it decides where it goes. The two marks on your blocker are the band that sends the puck straight back; everywhere else aims it, gently near the middle and as much as sixty degrees at the outside edge. The band is narrower than the puck on purpose. Make it generous and every rally comes back down the middle and the blocker is a wall, and leave it out entirely and you can never simply give the puck back.

The ends of the blocker are not part of this. Clip the corner and you get a plain rebound, which is the accident it looks like. Aiming only redirects the puck, never feeds it: the speed after a hit is the speed a straight return would have had.
